New Zealand vs England 2nd T20I: Phil Salt and Harry Brook star as England defeat New Zealand by 65 runs in the second T20I

After a lackluster batting display in the rain-affected first match, captain Harry Brook urged his batters to keep up their attacking intent. He showed the way in the second T20I with a stunning 78 off just 35 balls, while Phil Salt’s 85 from 56 deliveries helped England post 236 for 4 — the highest T20I total ever recorded at Hagley Oval — leaving New Zealand with an impossible chase.

The pitch offered much more pace this time, as Phil Salt mentioned during the innings break. The ball came onto the bat cleanly, and the difference was apparent from the start. After Mitchell Santner chose to bowl, Salt got going immediately by lofting Matt Henry’s second delivery over mid-wicket for six and following it with a four, collecting 11 runs off the opening over to set an aggressive tone. The next over brought three boundaries from Jacob Duffy, though Jos Buttler contributed only one before getting cramped by a short ball and dismissed. England’s scoring briefly slowed until Jacob Bethell found his rhythm with two crisp boundaries.

Santner then introduced off-spinner Michael Bracewell in the sixth over, but the move backfired. Salt cracked two fours, and Bethell hammered two consecutive sixes before falling to Bracewell’s final ball for a quickfire 24 off 12. By the end of the PowerPlay, England had already raced to 68, well ahead of New Zealand’s control. The momentum was clearly with the visitors, and the foundation was set for a massive total.

Harry Brook stepped in once the field spread out and took little time to assess conditions before launching an assault of his own. In Santner’s ninth over, he pummelled a six down the ground, scooped a four, and pulled another six to collect 19 runs. When James Neesham entered the attack — the same bowler who had dismissed Brook in the opener — the England skipper turned the tables, hammering 20 off his first over. Neesham’s misery worsened when he dropped Brook on 39 at long-on off Henry, a costly mistake as Brook ended the over with yet another six. At that point, Salt was cruising at 70 off 44, playing the perfect supporting role.

Brook continued his dominance by launching two more sixes off Kyle Jamieson, bringing his tally to five for the innings before being dismissed for an explosive 78 in the 18th over, concluding a brilliant 129-run partnership. Salt departed two balls later, but England’s momentum was unstoppable. Tom Banton provided a blistering finish with an unbeaten 29 off just 12 balls, helping England close at a commanding 236 — a total that underlined their batting depth and aggression throughout the innings.

New Zealand faced a daunting chase from the outset, and Brydon Carse made matters worse by claiming two wickets in his very first over. He dismissed Tim Robinson and Rachin Ravindra despite conceding 13 runs in that same over, halting any early progress. Mark Chapman and Tim Seifert tried to rebuild, keeping New Zealand reasonably close at 60 for 2 after the PowerPlay — just eight runs behind England’s pace — but the pressure soon began to mount.

Momentum slipped away in the middle overs as the English bowlers tightened their grip. Only 30 runs came in the next four overs following the PowerPlay. Liam Dawson maintained excellent control, first keeping things tight and then dismissing Chapman with a misfired shot to long-on. Adil Rashid joined the act by luring Seifert into a lofted miscue for 39 off 29 deliveries, and Dawson struck again soon after to remove Michael Bracewell, deepening New Zealand’s troubles.

The collapse continued as Daryl Mitchell slog-swept Rashid straight to deep mid-wicket, leaving the hosts reeling at 104 for 6 and effectively ending the contest. Captain Mitchell Santner offered brief resistance, hitting Dawson for 23 runs in an over to inject some life, but Rashid sealed the match by removing both Neesham and Santner (who managed 35 off 18) in the same over. Within another six balls, England wrapped up a dominant 65-run victory to take a 1-0 series lead.

Brief scores: England 236/4 in 20 overs (Phil Salt 85, Harry Brook 78; Mitchell Santner 0-41) beat New Zealand 171 in 18 overs (Tim Seifert 39, Mitchell Santner 35; Adil Rashid 4-32) by 65 runs.
